CONCELEBRATED MASS IN CELEBRATION OF THE CANONIZATION OF BLESSED PEDRO CALUNGSOD

The Philippine Consulate General in Agana, together with the Cebu Association of Guam, in cooperation with the Blessed Diego Luis De San Vitores Church, St Anthony Catholic Church and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School, led the concelebrated mass in celebration of the canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod  on Sunday, 21 October 2012 at the shrine of Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores.

The celebration, attended by hundreds of people, was highlighted by a short procession and novena in honor of Saint Pedro Calungsod. It was followed by a Holy Mass officiated by Father Val Gabriel Roa Rodriguez of St. Anthony-St Victor Church, and concelebrated by seven parish priest including  Jesuit Father Francis X. Hezel, who delivered the homily during the mass.

Father Hezel is a scholar on Micronesian affairs and the former director of Marianas Seminar, an NGO dedicated to issues on Micronesia. He noted that Calungsod’s canonization represented more than himself, it also represented the other nameless micronesians who brought their faith to Guam. Fr. Hezel later noted that “he would include other Filipinos who played a role in shaping part of Guam history”. He further stated that much of Guam’s Spanish influence came via the Philippines and Mexico

After the Holy Mass, Consul General Bayani V. Mangibin was invited to give a short message and took the opportunity to read President Aquino’s proclamation No. 481 declaring 21 October 2012 as a national day of celebration on the occasion of the canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod.

Mr. Enrique Ganaan, the President of the Cebu Association of Guam also delivered a brief remarks. He announced that the Cebu Association plans to adopt the Shrine and to hold Mass thereat every first Saturday of the month as Pedro Calungsod was killed on 02 April 1672, which was a first Saturday of April. He also appealed to the Filipinos in Guam to volunteer in helping maintain the Shrine. END
