Philippine Consulate General in Agana Opens  9th Guam Filipino Artists (GFA) Exhibit

GFA October featured artists Mr. Julius Sotomayor Cena & Ms. Mar-Vic Cagurangan delivering their messages.

The 9th Exhibit of the Guam Filipino Artists (GFA) at the Philippine Consulate General was opened on Friday, 05 October 2012, featuring budding filmmaker Julius Sotomayor Cena and longtime Journalist  Mar-Vic Cagurangan.

Mr. Cena, a visual art teacher and filmmaker, received his degrees in Psychology and Anthropology at the University of Guam. His first movie entitled “Mga Dayo” (Resident Aliens) was among the entries to the 2012 Cinemalaya Film Festival in Manila.  The said movie also won the “Best of the Marianas Award” and ‘Audience Award” at the recently concluded Guam International Film Festival.

On the otherhand, Ms. Cagurungan holds a Bachelors degree in Philosophy from the University of Sto Tomas. She is a longtime journalist and a contributing writer for Guam Business Magazine, Marianas Business Journal and Marianas Variety. She is also the Guam correspondent for Building Industry Magazine (Hawaii) and Agence France Presse.

The exhibit showcased a collection of acrylic paintings by Mr. Cena  and a  collection of  mixed media, crumpled magazine and assemblage medium by Ms. Cagurangan.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Consul General Bayani V. Mangibin, Vice Speaker Benjamin Cruz of the 31st Guam Legislature,  Ms. Cathy Gogue of the Department of Chamorro Affairs, Dr. John Peterson of the University of Guam and Mr. Karlo Dizon.

Other guests during the opening of the exhibit include Guam Filipino Artist President Rolly Zepeda, Vice President of the Filipino Community of Guam Meilou Miligan, Dr. Stephen Acabado of the University of Guam, media and TV personalities and members of the Guam Filipino Artists. END
