RELIEF EFFORTS FOR FLOOD AFFECTED AREAS IN THE PHILIPPINES
The Philippine Consulate General wishes to inform the public on the latest updates on the effects of the Southwest Monsoon that have caused floods ravaging 128 municipalities and 30 cities in 16 provinces of Regions I, III, IV-A, IV-B, VI and NCR in the Philippines.
Based on the situation report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of 6:00 AM, 09 August 2012, the total number of affected families have risen to 454,093 or a total of 1,953,481 persons. Out of this number, a total of 111,079 families or 538,445 persons are being served inside and outside Evacuation Centers. Casualties include 9 deaths in Lower Bayanihan, Barangay Commonwealth in Quezon City due to a landslide, 8 deaths due to drowning and 2 due to electrocution or a total of 19 reported cases.
A total of 154 roads and 4 bridges have also been declared not passable to all types of vehicles in Regions I, II, III, IV-A, VI, CAR and NCR due to flooding.
As early as 7 August 2012, the NDRRMC conducted an Emergency Meeting with H.E. President Benigno Aquino III in order to discuss the plan of action on damage assessment, asset mobilization, search and rescue (SAR), relief allocation and distribution to augment the efforts and resources of local government units (LGUs) and assist the affected communities.
As of 8 August 2012, the estimated cost of relief assistance that have been provided to the disaster victims have amounted to Php 7,934,820.00 from combined resources of the LGUs, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and a number of non-government organizations (NGOs).
The Philippine Consulate General is currently coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Manila regarding relief efforts and other assistance that may be extended to those affected by this recent calamity.
While no international appeal for humanitarian assistance has been issued at this time, all those interested to provide assistance and support for the affected communities may send their monetary donations to the following:
