The Cebu Association of Guam led the celebration of the Feast Day of Blessed Pedro Calungsod last Saturday, 31 March 2012 at the Shrine dedicated to the First Apostle of the Marianas, Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores.
Blessed Pedro Calungsod was a Filipino teenage missionary who came to Guam as a companion of Fr. Diego Luis de San Vitores and served as a sacristan and teacher of Cathecism. Calungsod and Fr. San Vitores were allegedly caught and killed on 2 April 1672 by Chamorro natives after baptizing the infant daughter of Chief Mata'pang and her mother who had converted to Catholicism. Recognizing the martyrdom of both, Blessed Pope John Paul II beatified Fr. San Vitores on 6 October 1985 while Calungsod was beatified on 5 March 2000. After more than a decade, the Holy See has announced that Pope Benedict XVI has signed and approved the promulgation decrees recognizing the miracles of Blessed Calungsod and that his canonization is scheduled on 21 October 2012.
Filipinos on Guam are very proud that Calungsod, who was a Filipino immigrant on Guam, will soon become the second Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz. To commemorate his martyrdom, the Cebu Association of Guam started the celebration with a thanksgiving mass followed by a procession of the image of Blessed Calungsod around the shrine.
Officers and staff of the Philippine Consulate General in Agana, led by Consul General Bayani V. Mangibin, joined the festivities.END
