Filipino Community of Guam Hosts the Annual Independence Day Ball

(Agana)  –  As part of the activities for the celebration of the 113th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, the Filipino Community of Guam hosted the annual Independence Day Ball last Friday, 17 June 2011, at the Sheraton Laguna Resort Guam.  Top photo shows Guam Governor Eddie Baza Calvo (3rd from right) offering a toast in honor of the common history and deep friendship between Guam and the Philippines.

Consul Kerwin Orville Tate (3rd from left) delivers his response to Gov. Calvo and offers a toast for the good health of President Barack Obama of the United States of America and for the longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship between Guam and the Philippines.  Joining Gov. Calvo and Consul Tate in the ceremonial toast are (L-R) Mr. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Judge Alberto Lamorena, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of Guam; Ms. Leah Beth Naholowaa, FCG President; and Vice Speaker Benjamin J. F. Cruz of the 31st Guam Legislature.

Mr. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, former Chairperson of the National Youth Commission and cousin of H.E. President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, was the Keynote Speaker of the event.  He shared with the Filipinos in Guam the good news about the Hapinoy Program, which assists Filipino mothers establish small businesses (sari-sari stores) in order to help themselves get out of poverty.
